Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Fernanda Medina fell in love with the world of fashion. Her love was able to blossom when she moved to New York with her family at the age of 9. After attending the High School of Art and Design she continued her studies at Parsons New York, left New York to be inspired by Amsterdam and came home again to study at FIT. Having always admired metal work, she advanced in the world of accessories and has worked for some of the top firms in New York. Her work history includes Liz Claiborne, Selena Collections, Tusk LTD, Haskell Jewels, Joan Rivers Worldwide, Roman/Sunstone, and Punch Fashions.
Syd and Pia NYC was born because of Fernanda’s devout love for accessory design and the overwhelming request from friends and family for custom made pieces. Her custom made pieces have a natural raw metal aesthetic, with a timeless New York edge. Fernanda’s inspiration hails from her home town Brooklyn, NY and her fabulous daughters Sydney and Saffia -which was how her company name was born. Her daughters are not only young fashionistas themselves but also her very own walking billboards. Fernanda is married and lives with her daughters and husband in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Syd and Pia NYC is currently sold at Henri Bendel in New York and at Flock Gift, a specialty boutique in Austin, TX. The brand has been featured in several publications, including Vogue IT, Elle Vietnam, Raine Magazine, El Diario NY, WOR Radio 710 AM, Joan Hamburg’s Bridal Show, and the Dominican newspaper El Caribe.
